In order to support and cultivate the large rice plantations being developed in South Carolina owners decided to purchase and transport large populations of slaves from Africa who had survived prior malaria outbreaks making their immune system stronger against the disease. The large populations of slaves made the colony predominantly African American by the 1730s and encouraged those associated with the plantation system to continue as they had been doing.
