Conflicts turned inward. As the North became increasingly industrialized after 1840, the differences between the North and the South became more and more apparent. The south produced this product, and was becoming more dependent on the north financially.

    During this time, the South primarily grew cotton, which required large numbers of slaves. This meant that the North's desire to abolish slavery would have crippled the Southern economy.
