Why did companies engage in union busting?

When works organized and joined the union they had greater power to negotiate for better wages and benefits. The companies duty is to the owner (shareholders) not the employee. Busting the union benefited the company and in turn the owners by by keeping costs as low as possible and profits as high as possible.
