The Roman philosophy of stoicism promoted as defined by John Sellars, "destructive emotions resulted from errors in judgement, and the active relationship between cosmic determinism and human freedom, and the belief that it is virtuous to maintain a will that is in accord with nature." This was basically the idea that virtue equates happiness and that someone who espoused this would not encounter misfortune.
