What were the economic and political causes for the rise of the italian city-states (Florence, Milan, Rome and Venice)

Florence became outstanding in banking and woolen manufacture. In the fifteenth century, Naples, Milan, and Venice ranked among the five most were intimately connected with the rise of new classes as the result of economic growth. Thus there were Gulfs and Ghibelline in many Italian cities.
