Both Clay and Jackson ran for president in the 1800s. Though he lost the nomination he backed John Quincy Adams to run against Jackson. Many of Jackson’s allies criticized Clay’s actions. This hurt Clay’s reputation and began a very intense rivalry between him and Jackson.
