What initially prevented deep mining for coal in premodern times?

    The danger from dying was the biggest problems. There were no engineers who could solve issues like draining a mine from water that was sometimes found at depths. If for example a water pump failed the mines could get flooded and every worker would die. Also, if by any chance a fire broke out, everyone would also die because the Oxygen would burn out.
