    Thomas Jefferson's claim for the colonies' independence can be found in the 2nd paragraph, 4th sentence, of the Declaration of Independence. It says,

    ... But when the long Train of Abuses and Usurpations pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty to overthrow such government, and provide new guards for their future security ...

    This states that the long abuse of their colonizer, the King of Great Britain, displayed his absolute despotism with his authority. For this reason, the colonies have the right to overthrow the government and have their independence.
