Why did the partition of Africa create artificial boundaries?

Reason why the partition of Africa create artificial boundaries is because the colonial European powers practically randomly drew lines on a map in order to divide up territory--not taking into consideration the tribal boundaries and local affiliations of the native populations, which were incredibly diverse.
