The 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie was an attempt to get the various Native American tribal nations to agree on boundaries and to stop fighting with one another, as well as allowing safe travel to settlers traveling the Oregon Trail. The treaty was broken soon after it was made, as the Lakota and Cheyenne peoples battled with the Crow, and further problems followed. A second Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed between the US government and a number of Indian nations in 1868, after the failure of that first treaty.
