Why was there increased interest in building a canal across central america in the late 1800s?

    (1) The United States had acquired colonies in the Pacific region. Such states were like Cuba that gained independence in 1902, and Puerto Rico that the USA refused to relinquish. The canals primary goal was to facilitate the movement of merchant ships across the continents.
