Why did democracy fail to establish itself in latin america after former spanish and portuguese colonies had gained their independence?

The adjustment to an independent Latin America became difficult. There was no united plan for this transition. There was trouble in leadership since provinces had their own leaders, they disagree on a central authority. This eventually resulted to upheavals within Latin America.
