What impact did the Soviet launching of Sputnik have on U. S. education and the space effort?

Sputnik made Americans focus more on the "space race" during the cold war to try to beat the Soviet Union. U. S. education started to focus more on sciences related to astronomy, and much more effort was put into the U. S. space program.
