The United States citizens increased in national pride, and many people moved west to take advantage of the farming opportunities.

After US President Thomas Jefferson had successfully completed the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon in 1803, there was a need to find out what exactly was contained in this vast area of territory that almost doubled the size of the US. Lewis and Clark were sent on an exploration mission to see how far the land extended to and to bring back information on the geography and Native Tribes in the new land. The expedition also brought back information on plant and animal life.
