Authoritarian regimes that cropped up in Europe and other parts of the idea, such as the fascist regimes of Italy and Spain, Nazis regime of Germany and communists regime under the Bolsheviks led by Stalin, were notorious for human rights violation, disappearance of millions of dissidents, and suppression of opposition through police or security forces.

The liberal democracies of France, USA and Britain guaranteed freedoms and liberties to their citizens and continued following democratic constitution, and the rule of law.
