Why could you call the Republican party in 1860 strictly sectional party

    The 1856 Presidential campaign was waged in a chaotic environment. The fragmented Democratic Party competed with the fragments of the Whig Party over slavery. The newly formed " Free Soil", "Opposition", and "North American" parties competed with the fledgling Republican Party.
