The Directory was criticized mostly by wealthy people who were afraid of losing their privileges, so they conspired against the government to find a way of having a government that was more in line with their own interests. This is why they supported the power grown of Bonaparte, in the hope that he would restore certain old privileges.

The poor, on the other hand, wanted a Jacobin rule, which was more in line with their own interests.
