The purpose of the Treaty of Fort Laramie was to keep Native Americans away from migration routes used by westward settlers.

This Treaty gave the Sioux certain areas of America to own, parts where no white people could enter. This was both for the protection of white people and Native Americans, however, it did not last for long because white people entered Native American territory in search of gold.
