Venice was a major city-state and trading port that was conveniently located on the coast thus there was easy access to Asia and Africa.

The city grew out of the trade, Italian merchants picked up goods from Asia and Africa, sail them back to European ports and sell them for a profit. It was the most prosperous city in Europe characterized by a powerful navy thus dominated the Mediterranean trade.

Goods imported from Africa and Asia were spices, silk, opium, incense, and herbs and distributed in Europe by the traders.
