The southerners did not like John brown as he wanted to abolish slavery they instead saw him as a threat to there "way of life" but the north liked his beliefs.

Virginia authorities charged Brown with treason, conspiracy and murder and sentenced him to hang. With that being said Virginia was a southern state and therefore they saw him as an enemy whereas the north saw him as a hero.
