    These anti-Sandinista rebels were called Contras, which means shortening counterrevolution and were also called Nicaraguan Resistance. They were groups opposed to the government of the Sandinista Front for National Liberation in Nicaragua part of the Sandinismo that is a Nicaraguan political current pertaining to the ideological spectrum of the left. They received support from the US in the 1980s.
