Two ways that the framers made it clear that the US is one nation, According to article 4 describes:

a. Section 1 and 2 - Separate states must accept decisions such as criminal.

b. Section 2 - Citizens of the US are citizens of the whole nation, regardless of which state they were born in and live in.

And it is not a loose confederation of semi-independent states.
