Why do tens of thousands of sub-Saharan Africans try to cross the Mediterranean each year? How are these refugees commonly portrayed?

    They are hoping to get to Europe to escape violence and poverty from their countries. Sometimes they make it but mostly they are considered a nuisance and not allowed into Europe.
