Explain why you think Marshall is described as the great Chief Justice

Chief Justice John Marshall was the head of the Supreme Court from 1801-1835. His tenure involved some of the most important Supreme Court cases in 19th century American history. Undoubtedly, he is remembered most for his ruling on the Marbury vs. Madison case.

In this Supreme Court case, Chief Justice Marshall established the concept of judicial review. Judicial review allows the Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of laws made by the US Congress. Essentially, the Supreme Court got to rule whether or not laws made by Congress broke the constitution. This power given to the Supreme Court allows them to get rid of laws that violate citizen's rights. This concept is still use constantly by Supreme Court justices in the US.
