    Jacques Cartier sailed to the New World in 1534 in search of D) a northwest passage to China. However, he was the first European to map and explore the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River. Cartier was a French explorer and claimed what would now be modern-day Canada for France.
