    British settlements:

    1) first colonies were charter colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts.

    2) colonists were farmers and tradesmen.

    3) most colonists were Catholics.

    French settlements:

    1) first colonies were trading posts in Newfoundland and parts of Canada.

    2) colonists were fur traders, merchants and missionaries.

    3) most colonists were non-Catholics.
