Even though Great Britain was at odds with France over the situation involving the Suez Canal, why did it side with France as World War I began? France had returned the canal to England before the war. England believed France had a better chance of winning the war. France was better prepared militarily for a major war. Germany had tried to build a bigger fleet of ships than England.
