Loyalism is a term in the United States that largely referred to individuals who remained loyal to the British Government throughout the American Revolution. These loyalists believed that they were better off remaining under the control of the British for both personal, economic, and political reasons. Therefore, depending on someones position within the colonies and ideological view of their citizenship they would view themselves potentially as a loyalist.
