    Joseph Stalin implemented a lot of policies which forced many people to work in harsh labor camps. This resulted in a lot of deaths. Stalin also tightened government control on the press, religion, and others.

    In general, and for most of the population, life in the Soviet Union became extremely difficult and dangerous under Stalin. He was a very ruthless and paranoid leader who was not afraid to execute those who disagreed with him.
