Positive & Negative Effects of Prohibition. Prohibition permanently corrupted law enforcement, the court system, and politics. Over 10,000 people died during Prohibition from drinking wood alcohol. Prohibition began on January 16, 1920, when the Eighteenth Amendment went into effect.
