Why are natural rights considered "enlightened" ideas?

    I would say they are considered enlightened because our rights go beyond our basic needs for survival. in an animal society the top predator eats it's prey, which might eat even smaller prey. it has shelter (a tree, a cave) but the idea of rights is distinctly human. it's part of our ability to have conscious thought.
