Alexis De Tocqueville's travels through the United States led him to conclude that it was a democratic country. In 1831, he was sent from France to America, with Gustave Beaumont, to study the American prison system. But, when he came back to France, he also wrote well-known book Democracy in America, which examined the democratic revolution that he believed had been occurring over the past seven hundred years. In this work, Tocqueville warned that democracy could lead to the new kinds of tyranny. Radical equity can, he claimed, can produce selfishness and individualism.
