    The gentry was an equivalent of scholars: so the answer "scholar" is the best.

    The members of the gentry were also the government officials - so this is also a correct answer.

    "peasants" are definitely not a correct answer - they were a different class in China.

    And the Samurai were not Chinese, but Japanese
