The Location of Rome was important and vital because it was at the centre of the Mediterranean. All the important Civilizations were situated around the "Mare Nostrum" as the Roman called it. It was easier for them to conquer from there and trade with countries that were part of their Empire and from there further afield from the foothold they had in the conquered territories. Going by sea was easier than by land and for the continental part of their Empire the had to built the Roman roads covering the great distances between the different Provincial Capitals. However the heart of the Roman Empire through all of its History would always be the Mediterranean this never changed even after the Fall of the Western part. The remaining Eastern part called Byzantium, after its capital, would always try to have one very good Sea port in the center of the Mediterranean, even though they were right on the Bosporus the bridge between East and West.
