Why were Puritan schools referred to as dame schools?

They were for girls to learn how to be housewives.

Males had to attend academies.

Males and females were allowed to attended together.

Instruction was presented in the home.

    Instruction was presented in the home ... the teacher's home. Dame schools were the precursors of nurseries.
