For what reason did the tokugawa shoguns expel all foreign traders except for the dutch?

    There were two major reasons. First was that the Dutch traders gave numerous gifts to the shogun and his people in order to ensure that they have their support. Second is that they had to write down reports about Europe and European powers like Spain and England which basically meant that they were Japanese spies in Europe in exchange for trading rights.
