For what purpose did the Mound Builder cultures use earthen mounds?

The mounds had many purposes, and the exact information about their purposes is lost, since they did not leave written reports. However, some purposes that we believe were the most likely were burial (of important people), religious ceremonies, and places where the elite of their groups could live.
