What factors accounted for the rise of the republican party in the south?

South was mostly democratic, especially in the Slavery era before the civil war where democrats wanted to have slaves and republicans wanted to abolish slavery. After the war, the republicans were disliked in the south but they were in charge. During the 1960s when there were big cultural issues at hand, the republican people started courting with the idea of preserving the southern way of life because they knew that it would bring them votes. Slowly, the entire south started supporting republicans because the Democrats became too liberal for them.
