Each party saw themselves as winning on an affluent, self-serving upper class that equipped the system for its own advantage and benefit. Jacksonian democracy personified a profound resentment towards the East Coast banking and commercial elites, who were held responsible for putting their financial interests above those of the average people, especially farmers. To keep their acknowledged anti-elitism, Jacksonian Democrats preferred wider involvement in the political process, which they reached primarily by an enlargement of the franchise.
