    1. Rome was way too large. So much land, not enough people

    2. The Romans had been attacked and attacked by barbarians like Atillia the Hun. Rome had been sacked.

    3. The Roman soldier, fighting for his nation was gone. Instead, there was barbarian mercenaries fighting in the colours of Rome, who felt no real desire to save Rome.
