The public sphere of work was men's sphere and was characterized by self-reliance and independence. Due to the low wages and high job demand it was necessary for men to only rely on their skills to secure a job and keep their job. Anyone was replaceable and men needed to be the bread winners, so they stayed focused on the job at hand and worked as if their life depended on it.
