Why was Nicolaus Copernicus's theory that the Earth orbits the sun so shocking to the people in the 1500s?

    One of the reasons is that most of the people were Catholic and in the bible humans were the center of the universe. So the idea that we were just observers was contradicting the Bible's theory. And even the people that weren't Catholic thought that they were the center of the universe as well. NC was Catholic but he thought that god's creation was infinity big not just our solar system
