The development of steel and oil caused many spin-off inventions to be created subsequently. For example, railroads were invented as a result of steel, and once oil was invented these trains were much more efficient. Then, more goods and materials could be transported to many different places, causing other industries to grow even if they don't physically require steel and/or oil. Other inventions such as cars, skyscrapers, and much more that contributed to creating a more modern society were also brought into the time.
