Causes of the civil war and effects of those causes

By far the greatest cause of the Civil War in the United States was slavery--specifically issues that arose over the question of whether or not slavery would be allowed in the new territories that were opening up in the west. The South tended to be pro-slavery, with the North being against the spread of slavery into the new territories.
