Why was the Fourteenth Amendment widely cited in the post-Civil War economic boom, when businesses sought to escape from unwanted regulation by the states?

    The Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the state from taking action that would deprive anyone of liberty or property. People would apply this amendment to their businesses, essentially making them "persons" in the eyes of the law
