How did the Dawes act fail to Americanize Indians?

    The purpose of the Act was never to 'Americanize' Native Americans, that was just a pretext.

    By dividing tribal lands up into individual holdings rather than a collective tribal possession, it meant that individual natives could be bullied or cheated out of their land allotment. Individual land ownership was a concept that Native Americans never understood, let alone embraced.
