Who set the standard for how history is recorded today

Herodotus of Halicarnassus and Thucydides, both from the 5th century B. C., are regarded by many historians as the "fathers of history," which is to say that they are often credited as the early innovators of the sort of rigorous, detailed, and chronology based recording of history that we practice today.
