At the First Battle of Bull Run, General McDowell lead a Union force on a march towards the Confederate capital at Richmond. Near the Bull Run River, McDowell encountered an encamped Confederate force under the command of PGT Beauregard. McDowell staged a surprise attack with his forces. However, fierce fighting from both sides lead to the Confederate army winning the field, and the Union forces being forced to retreat towards DC.
