Contraband camps during the U. S Civil War are used to describe camps or groups of African slaves who escaped to the Union lines. During the war, slaves in the Confederate states were attracted to the Union since they declared that slaves who went into their lines will be considered freedmen and would not be returned to their owners. The first such camp was established by Gen. Ulysses Grant at Grand Junction, Tennessee.
