The most significant issue regarding slavery in the compromises made over slavery is whether or not slavery will exist in the new territories that the US gains throughout the 19th century.

Several different compromises tried to address this problem. The Missouri Compromise (1820) tried to fix this problem by including the 36'30 line. This line established that all states north of this line would be free states and all states below this line would be slave states.

This compromise is then overruled by the Compromise of 1850, which gets rid of 36'30. This compromise allows for California to enter as a free state, a new fugitive slave law, and the New Mexico territory to use the idea of popular sovereignty (aka letting voters pick whether or not their was slavery).

This idea of popular sovereignty was then used in the Kansas-Nebraska Act. However, this idea backfired as it caused massive violence in the Kansas territory. All of these laws tried to address the expansion of slavery but none of them could successful provide a permanent solution.
